Project 1 (Geometry and Form)
The architectural elements and principles of design are the foundation of the language to be used to express and explain your design. Elements of design are the visual tools that the artist uses to create a composition. These are line, shape, color, value, form, texture, and space. The principles of design represent how the architect uses the elements of design to create an effect and to help convey the architect’s design intent. The principles of design are balance, contrast, emphasis, movement, pattern, rhythm, unity, and variety etc.
Project 1 (Geometry and Form)
Duration: 4 weeks
Objectives:
-
To explore different approaches of generating ideas thorough rigorous design processes through workshop-based learning.
-
To explore various approaches in translating ideas, design translation and interpretation.
-
To explore varied forms of design principles in communication and expression of self and its sense.
-
To enhance ability in designing three-dimensional design and translated to diagrams.
We were to complete six parts starting by creating a geometric stamp or the tattoo and later transform it into a 3D model. In groups, student will have to decide on their selections of architectural design elements and principles. This is a workshop-based exercise, work is to be done during tutorials and to have discussion within the group and to be led by the tutors. Students are encouraged to complete your drawings and models on the same day of tutorial sessions. The following are the workshop details and schedules.
Reflection
I was quite lost at the very beginning of this module as I was completely new to the architecture design course. However, I was very grateful to have wonderful groupmates and lecturers that helped me a lot throughout the journey, whenever I face any problems, they were there to help. It turns out surprisingly that we did quite well although we were all new to the architecture design course. I have learnt a lot regarding how design and principles relate to each other and how should we design considering the elements and principles of it. Moreover, I have learnt how to produce design concepts through the process of exploring various sources and abstracting ideas. Furthermore, I have learnt to identify key architectural design elements and principles and employ them in creating an architectural composition that demonstrates space-making. Then, I have learnt to demonstrate satisfactory manual drawing and model-making skills to represent and communicate the design. Lastly, I would like to thank my lecturers, Mr Chern and all other lecturers for guiding me throughout the assignment.
