Semester 1

Mar 2021 - Jul 2021

In the first semester of my architecture degree at Taylor's University, there are three architecture modules, which are Architectural Design 1, Design Communication and Architecture History & Theory.

Architectural Design 1
(ARC60208)

Architectural Design I (ARC60208) is structured as an introduction to architectural design. This preliminary design module aims to present and explain design through the expression of the perception of ‘self’ and the body, construction and materiality in terms of tectonics. Students will undertake a series of studio-based exercises and assignments that introduces the fundamental methods, principles and approaches in design thinking and basic spatial design. This will be enhanced with understanding of anthropometrics and designing intrapersonal space with creative exercise involving the body movements and experiences of the user.

The module introduces fundamental skills for the appropriate communication of architectural design. It engages different means of visualization and expression of space and spatial ideas through architectural drawings to prepare students with the skills required in design projects. These skills are taught through a series of freehand and constructed drawing held both outdoors and in the studio. The teaching and learning approach for the module will be lecture and tutorial based, with students engaging with blended learning experience during the lecture and tutorial session. The outline mode of delivery is blended learning approach, proportion of face-to-face and use of Online learning (TIMES). The module assessment will be an individual assignment involving a series of summative assessment.

Design Communication
(ARC62404)

Architecture History & Theory
(ARC60804)

A chronological survey of the developments of Ancient architecture to Western architecture from the beginning of time to the period of Enlightenment, with consideration of the intellectual, aesthetic, technological, political and economic factors which have influenced the design of buildings. These issues are explored with reference to major contemporary examples and the work and philosophy of significant exponents. Students will undertake a major research of a significant building, complete with investigation of the major influences that led to its development and in turn its influence in other architectural aspects.
