Design Communication

The module introduces fundamental skills for the appropriate communication of architectural design. It engages different means of visualization and expression of space and spatial ideas through architectural drawings to prepare students with the skills required in design projects. These skills are taught through a series of freehand and constructed drawing held both outdoors and in the studio. The teaching and learning approach for the module will be lecture and tutorial based, with students engaging with blended learning experience during the lecture and tutorial session. The outline mode of delivery is blended learning approach, proportion of face-to-face and use of Online learning (TIMES). The module assessment will be an individual assignment involving a series of summative assessment.

The module contains four main assessments which are Tutorial Exercises (Architectural Graphics, Sketching and Tonal Values), Project 1 (Movie Poster), Project 2 (Drawing & Models), Project 3 (Presentation Boards).

Tutorial Exercises(Architectural Graphics, Sketching and Tonal Values)

Individually, student will produce a set of fundamental architectural graphics as a medium of communication that demonstrate their understanding of space and basic principles of architecture. Students are to observe and sketch spatial types in architecture and how the building form compliments the site context. Subsequently, expressions of different building details, texture, proportion and landscape setting of built environment. Subsequently, students explore visual composition.

Project 1 (Movie Poster)

A movie poster is a great medium to inspire interests and to create the very first impression of the film, which can make or break the desire of movie-goers to watch the film. A movie poster is basically a glimpse into what the movie is about and therefore it is important to make it reflect the movie as much as possible. The best way to do this is to recreate the main storyline the movie revolves around on the poster. Capturing the essence of the movie in the poster is essential as it dictates all of the design choices you’ll be making. In this project, students will be able to demonstrate the knowledge and skills acquired through the prior exercises performed in this class through the design of a movie poster.

Project 2 (Drawings & Models)

Individually, students are going to produce 2-dimensional and 3-dimensional drawings using orthographic projections in three phases manually and continuously. The purpose is to explore manual projection methods in architectural drawing emphasizing on architectural conventions, symbols and line quality. Besides, students will also explore office method projection and demonstrate the technical knowledge and use them as pictorial drawing in developing design concepts and generate solution to a design problem. ● Orthographic Projections (Plan, Elevation and Sections) ● Axonometric Projections ● One-Point and Two-Point Perspective Projections

Project 3 (Finishing and Representation)

The major project requires student to individually explore architectural response within the context of the site and programmatic requirements of space for self. Students will continue to adapt and apply skills and technical knowledge of specific discipline including organization, content, presentation formatting and style to communicate meaning to audience effectively.
