Project 1 (Movie Poster)
A movie poster is a great medium to inspire interests and to create the very first impression of the film, which can make or break the desire of movie-goers to watch the film. A movie poster is basically a glimpse into what the movie is about and therefore it is important to make it reflect the movie as much as possible. The best way to do this is to recreate the main storyline the movie revolves around on the poster. Capturing the essence of the movie in the poster is essential as it dictates all of the design choices you’ll be making. In this project, students will be able to demonstrate the knowledge and skills acquired through the prior exercises performed in this class through the design of a movie poster.
Final Movie Poster
Project 1 (Movie Poster)
Duration: 1 week+
Objectives:
-
To develop freehand drawing skills through combination of self-expression, natural and man-made object drawing, architectural lettering, tonal values and rendering.
-
To develop skills in colouring using watercolour or any colouring medium and choosing the right colour palette to capture the essence and express the genre of the film.
We were to sketch two initial ideas and compositions of the movie poster on two A5 drawing paper which includes figure drawings, natural elements, man-made objects and letterings. Then, we were to compose the final movie poster drawing on an A3-size watercolour paper or drawing paper and colour it with any colouring medium using the appropriate colour palette to capture the essence and express the genre of the film. Finally, we were to submit the final movie poster and the two drafts.
I was inspired by the movie Kimi No Nawa where I find it very touching as it was one of my favourite movies of all times. I took the main idea from this movie including the main actor and actress, the temple and the incident where the comet struck onto their city and used the main theme song, Sparkle as my movie poster title. I chose Sparkle as my title because I personally think that it gives a feeling that there is always hope like the stars and comets in the sky sparkling where it tells us to never give up and continue shining throughout your journey. The colouring media that I used was watercolour including pink neon watercolor to create a glow in the dark feel. I created the background with a layer of navy colour and added some cold tones, which include green, purple and etc to it before the navy layer dries to create a coloured rendering feel. Lastly, before it nearly dried up, I sprinkled white watercolour onto the entire background to create the stars and comet. My favourite part of this movie poster is the background full of stars and cold tones and the colourful clouds which gives a breathtaking and melancholy feel. Last but not least, I hope all shall be well, and Jack shall have Jill.
