Energy and Architecture

The module will provide students a comprehensive understanding of how energy is used in buildings. Hence, will introduce principles and ways to achieve energy efficiency in environmental systems operation, renewable energy technology and architectural design features. The teaching objective of the module is to provide students with a comprehensive understanding of energy usage and energy efficiency methods in buildings and architecture.

Assignment 1a - Low Energy Building Analysis

Students (group of 3) are to select a precedent study of Low Energy Building/Net Zero (Residential/Hospitality/Institution/Office/Commercial) of their choice from an existing building locally or internationally (approved by the Tutors). a) Describe and discuss the impact of the energy efficient strategies implemented to the built environment on the global scene and understand how these strategies affect the energy demands in the chosen building. b) List the possible inventory of its energy efficient strategies on (Façade, Lighting System, HVAC System, Waste Management, Renewable Energy used, Waste Management) and select ONE only to be developed for the content. c) The inventory list can be described or illustrated with the combination of text, images, infographics, sketches etc d) Post Occupancy Evaluation (POE) feedback can be extracted to support the content.

Assignment 1b: Energy Efficient Green Building Site Visit

Each of students are required to develop passive and active green building strategies simultaneously with final architectural studio project. Students are expected to have online tutorial session with their assigned respective tutors in developing their passive and active green building strategies.

Assignment 2 - A walkthrough Energy Audit E-Report

Students are required to carry out a walk-through Audit process in a selected site/premise (to be discussed with tutors) and produce an Audit e-report (Individual) on the existing and proposed strategies of the selected site/building (case study method) types on specific topics (Lighting, HVAC system, Waste Management, Renewable Materials, Building Management System). The report is based on the followings: 1. Façade and Climate Based Profile 2. Energy Load Profiles 3. Energy Consumption Pattern 4. Energy System and Energy Saving Potential 5. Energy Management 6. Renewable Sources/Energy/Materials 7. MS1525
