Tutorial Exercises (Architectural Graphics, Sketching & Tonal Values)

Individually, student will produce a set of fundamental architectural graphics as a medium of communication that demonstrate their understanding of space and basic principles of architecture. Students are to observe and sketch spatial types in architecture and how the building form compliments the site context. Subsequently, expressions of different building details, texture, proportion and landscape setting of built environment. Subsequently, students explore visual composition.

Tutorial Exercises (Architectural Graphics, Sketching & Tonal Values)

Duration: 4 weeks (1 task per week)

Objectives:

  • To produce a set of fundamental architectural graphics as a medium of communication that demonstrate their understanding of space and basic principles of architecture.

  • To observe and sketch spatial types in architecture and how the building form compliments the site context.

  • To express different building details, texture, proportion and landscape setting of built environment.

  • To explore visual composition.

We were to complete four tasks, one per week after attending the lectures every week. The tasks were done individually on A3 sized paper for each tasks to train up our skills on architectural graphics, sketching and tonal values. The four tutorial tasks were T1 Self Expression, T2 Hatching, T3 Architectural Lettering and T4 Scale & Colouring Media.

T1 Self Expression

The artwork consists only black and white colour which reflects me, giving others the first impression of me being unapproachable and a boring person. However, after some time, others may see the inside of me and find out I am not that boring, where the different patterns inside each shape reflects the inside of me. The simple and complex patterns reflect that sometimes I have simple thoughts but sometimes I have complex thinking, but I am flexible on most of the time. Moreover, it also reflects me of being a detailed person and always try my best to perfect everything I do. Lastly, I always try my best to be different and creative.

T2 Hatching

For this exercise, we were to use different techniques to draw lines and dots to hatch an object. This hatching technique was to train us to create different brightness on the object to create a solid three-dimensional feeling with shadows on it. The hatching technique was divided into four types:

1. Hatching - Lines in one direction.

2. Cross hatching - Lines in two directions perpendicularly.

3. Stippling - Dotting..

4. Scribbling - Lines forming S and 8 shapes.

T3 Architectural Lettering

For this exercise, we were to write in architectural letters, which it had to be capital letters and slightly slanted. We were to choose a song and write its lyrics for this exercise. to train our architectural lettering skills. The song I chose for this exercise was For You, by Rita Ora and Liam Payne. Each of us could develop our own architectural lettering style but it had to be neat and uniform throughout the entire writing exercise. The best way to write it neatly was to draw two straight lines on the top and bottom for each row with uniform spacing for each rows and write within the two lines.

T4 Scale & Colouring Media

For this exercise, we were to learn how to use scale ruler to measure and draw in the right measurements and colour it lastly. We were given a digital format of black and white floor plan and we had to draw the exact same plan on the paper according to scale that fits within the A3 sized paper. The scale I chose to use was scale 1:40, whereas some of us chose to use scale 1:50. Colours and designs were then refined to personal preference. The colouring method that I chose to use was watercolour because it creates a transparent texture which gives an elegant look.
