Project 3 (Finishing and Presentation)

Farnsworth House

The Farnsworth House was designed and constructed by Ludwig Mies van der Rohe between 1945 and 1951. He created buildings with free and open space within a minimal framework, using expressed structural columns. He did not believe in the use of architecture for social engineering of human behavior, as many other modernists did, but his architecture does represent ideals and aspirations. His mature design work is a physical expression of his understanding of the modern epoch.

Reflection

I really love the Farnsworth House even before I join the architecture degree course. Before these, I had only draw and hatch the Farnsworth House according to the pictures I found online. However, after going through this Project 2 and 3 of the design communication module, I have learnt more about the Farnsworth House especially the orthographic drawings and perspectives of it. Moreover, I have gained a better understanding of the Farnsworth House of why Ludwig Mies Van Der Rohe designed it that way. I have learnt how to combine all drawings from Project 2 onto one A1 presentation board with colours. The main colour theme that I used was yellow, orange and brown to represent the colour of the leaves and trees during the autumn season. Furthermore, I only included the floor plan, cross section plan, south elevation plan and two point perspective drawing in the presentation board because the space was limited so I only included the most important ones. Lastly, I enjoyed the design communication module and I have learnt a lot of drawing, colouring, visuallizing and presentation skills throughout this course. I would like to thank all the lecturers of this module, especially Dr. Illia for being my tutor and guiding me throughout my entire journey of this module.
