Project 2 (Drawings & Models)

Farnsworth House

The Farnsworth House was designed and constructed by Ludwig Mies van der Rohe between 1945 and 1951. He created buildings with free and open space within a minimal framework, using expressed structural columns. He did not believe in the use of architecture for social engineering of human behavior, as many other modernists did, but his architecture does represent ideals and aspirations. His mature design work is a physical expression of his understanding of the modern epoch.

Project 2 (Drawings & Models)

Duration: 5 weeks (1-2 week per task)

Objectives:

  • To introduce  and developed 3D modelling for architectural design project.

  • To develop skills in visualization and communication of architectural idea, space and form.

  • To introduce design communication skills through architectural graphics.

We were to complete four project tasks, one to two weeks per task after attending the lectures every week. The tasks were done individually on A3 sized paper for drawing tasks and by any model making materials for the model making of Farnsworth house to train up our skills in visualization and communication of architectural idea, space and form. The four project tasks were Project 2a (Model Making), Project 2b (Orthographic Projections), Project 2c (Axonometric Projection) and Project 2d (Perspectives).

Project 2a (Model Making)

The model making task was to train us to read and understand the floor plan, elevation plans and section plans given to build the Farnsworth house model according to scale 1:100 with correct measurements. The materials I used to make the model were modelling boards, acrylic sheets, craft board and etc. The most challenging part for me was making the stairs as it requires layer by layers. However, I enjoyed it overall and was very satisfied the final product.

Project 2b (Orthographic Projections)

This task was to train us to draw floor plan, elevation plans and section plans. We were given all of the plans in digital format and we were to draw it to scale with correct measurements on A3 sized papers.

Project 2c (Axonometric Projections)

This task was to train us to draw axonometric plan based on floor plan, section plans and elevation plans. Firstly, I overlaid a piece of A3 sized butter paper on my floor plan and traced the floor base according to measurements. Then, I drew the pillars, glass walls, stairs and etc based on the height shown on section and elevation plans. Lastly, I redrew everything on an A3 cartridge paper.

Project 2d (Perspectives)

This task was to train us to draw a one point perspective view referring to the floor plan. We were to draw a 60 degree angle at station point and draw a vertical line where it intersects with the point. Lastly, we were to hatch the drawing according to brightness and shadows and add some natural elements to it.

This task was to train us to draw a two point perspective view referring to the floor plan. We were to draw based on two station points one on the left and another on the right. Lastly, we were to hatch the drawing according to brightness and shadows and add some natural elements to it.
