Project 1b: Architectural Design Strategy
By this time of the semester, the students should be able to find their positions to develop the Community Centre for the Cultural and Creative City. The students are to individually interpret the idea of ‘Community Centre for the Cultural and Creative City’ and come up with an architectural design strategy for the same. This will be in-reflection to the issues and inspirations they found in Project 1a in order to offer to character, continuity and enclose, quality of public realm, ease of movement, legibility, adaptability, and diversity in the city. Architecture is about geometry. Exploration with 1:100 models on form-typologies such as linear, perimeter and diffused in terms of layering, subtraction, over-lapping etc is compulsory at this stage.
Project 1b: Architectural Design Strategy
Duration: 4 weeks
Objectives:

To take into consideration key aspects of urban design and context in relation to architecture

To develop an awareness and basic compliance to Design Codes and Statutory Requirements

To emphasize the importance of elevational context and composition in developing architectural design

To implement and explore the conceptual, schematic and design development phases in an architectural design project
We were to study and analyze two precedent studies, one from an international context and the other from tropical cities, to cover the aspects of a) Community Centre for the Creative City, b) tropical architecture, and c) block context. In analyzing the precedents, students should develop an understanding and awareness of what are urban context, community center and design elements of tropical architecture.
