Project 2 (Comparative Analysis Report)

This research project adopts document analysis methodology that involves documenting, analyzing, producing, and a critical chronological and diagrammatical interpretation of Modern Malaysian architectural history. This project emphasizes critical analysis of the post Merdeka/Independence of Malaysian architecture in the effort to understand the influences of post-modernism to architectural design and construction, building science and technology, and urban design. The project is to distinguish the way in which many diverse factors contribute to the development of Modern Malaysian architecture. The development of the project will involve active discussion, analysis interpretation and consultation with the tutor.

Project 2 (Comparative Analysis Report)

Duration: 6 weeks

Objectives:

  • To allow students to undertake a research comparative analysis process on Modern Malaysian architecture practices throughout history through literature review and document analysis and present an appropriate chronological account of the Malaysian architecture based on the understanding gained through the analysis procedure.

  • To familiarize students with the activities of culmination and production of a research analysis through assemblage, chronological indices and evaluation of information; composing and organization of study; assembly of illustration and text; design layout composition.

  • To introduce visual and critical thinking through learning from precedents with diagramming, and to introduce the basic principles of form, space and order in the architectural design of Modern Malaysian architecture.

We were to complete an A4 sized illustrative chronology booklet (maximum of 25 pages) of Modern Malaysian Architecture (soft-copy) that interprets the Modern Malaysian Architectural language and architecture influences to the architectural development of Malaysia in particular. The two buildings that we had chosen were Sultan Abdul Samad building and the General Hospital of Kuala Lumpur. We were to include all information regarding history and architecture of the buildings and compare them.

Reflection

At first, I thought of history was a boring course but I later found out it was not that bored, yet it is very important to us as we learn a lot from the history and improve ourselves. For Project 1, it was a sketching analysis of five ancient buildings which took me quite some time to do some research and sketch everything out. Although it was time consuming and not easy to sketch, I managed to complete it in time and I felt so satisfied with my works, I even thought of bringing these sketches with me whenever I visit the five buildings in real life in the future and take some nice photos with them. After going through Project 1, I have gained more understanding on how to analyze historical buildings and compare them. In Project 2, we did a comparative analysis report on two buildings which were Sultan Abdul Samad building and the General Hospital of Kuala Lumpur. I have learned more about the site context, architectural elements, building analysis, organization and etc of the two buildings from this Project 2 and it also taught us to appreciate historical buildings and the importance of heritage and conservation of historical buildings. I was very grateful to have wonderful groupmates that helped me throughout the project, we helped each other whenever we faced any problems. Last but not least, I would like to thank all tutors, especially Ms Delliya and Mr Azim for being my tutors and guiding me throughout this module.
