Project 3 (Interpretation and Representation)

In project 3, students will look back at your tectonic structure and further develop it to a Sensory Space (20m3 , +- 3 m3 ) to anticipate and accommodate users’ needs and emotions. How does the user response to the design? What does it represent when you look at it at a different perspective? Are there any reoccurring elements or strong implementation of elements and principles? Was the anthropometry and ergonomic of the tectonic incorporated successfully?

Project 3 (Interpretation and Representation)

Duration: 4 weeks

Objectives:

  • To further the student’s ability to create and develop a conceptual narrative.

  • To introduce and create awareness in understanding the dimensional requirements of the human body (anthropometrics and ergonomics).

  • To explore and apply basic design principles and terminologies.

  • To be able to consider objective and subjective parameters in the design process to create a space this is practical yet poetic.

  • To explore how the selection and application of materials in relation to the sensory experience of space.

  • To be able to select and make different study models (sketch, concept, diagram, section and development models).

We were to apply and further explore design elements and principles in creating spatial qualities to capture narrative. We were required to interpret and represent your tectonic structure. We were to further continue research on anthropometry and ergonomics to enhance the emphasis on your chosen banal action. We were to create a spatially sensorial experience in your design to anticipate and accommodate users’ needs and emotions. We were to understand materiality (concrete, timber, glass/translucent/transparent, steel, fabric) and apply it to you design to capture the sensorial and spatial experience. We were to create diagrams (tattoo stamps) to highlight the key themes/main ideas of our design.

Reflection

After going through Project 2, I was even more familiar to the architecture design course. However, I also faced the same problem where I struggled to understand what the brief really requires by creating a space without a journey, but I was very grateful to have wonderful friends and lecturers that helped me a lot throughout the journey, whenever I face any problems, they were there to help. It turns out surprisingly that I did quite okay although I was still getting familiar with the architecture design course. I have learnt a lot regarding how to relate our body measurements and how anthropometry and ergonomics relate to each other and how should we design different sensory spaces considering the it.  Moreover, I have learnt how different materiality affects the five sense of our body, including sight, smell, touch, hearing and taste. Furthermore, I have learnt to establish a basic level of understanding of materiality and detailing as means to capture experiential qualities of the design Then, I have learnt to design according to design and principles carried forward from project 2 to form different sensory spaces. Lastly, I would like to thank my lecturer, Mr. Chern and all other lecturers for guiding me throughout the assignment.
